Sometimes the fluids that come out of a well are not ready to be transported via pipeline or treated in the refinery. When water and oil have formed an emulsion, it becomes necessary to apply chemicals and special methods to separate them. Usually an oilfield emulsion must be treated, or most of the water must be removed from the oil, before the oil is shipped.
