The idea for the book was sparked by a panel at the July 2008 European Conference on Modern South Asian Studies. Scholars of various humanities and social sciences explore the concept and implementation of re-use in the visual and religious and the social and political, with a special focus on South Asia. The topics include temple conversions in Karnataka and appropriation and re-use in Orissa, evolving patterns of re-use in Indian jewelry and 19th-century Britain, institutional continuity and indigenization of Westminster parliamentarianism and Western party politics in post-colonial India, the use and re-use of "Pakistan" in the Indian Muslim press (1932-47), and the modern re-use and reinterpretation of ancient Jain concepts.
