This book presents strategies for providing learning and professional development opportunities for teachers that lead to the building of community in schools. The purpose of the book is to provide educational leaders with the knowledge and skills they need to work effectively with teachers, parents, administrators, students, and the community at large. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the learning community. Chapter 2 focuses on leadership, applying Lamberts model of constructivist leadership to the development of a learning community. Chapter 3 examines principles, standards, and strategies for professional development. Chapter 4 explores working in groups. Chapter 5 discusses the study group as a strategy for building a learning community. Chapter 6 presents information on using classroom observation to provide learning opportunities for teachers. Chapter 7 discusses other collaborative ways to improve instruction in learning communities. Chapter 8 examines professional portfoli's as a learning opportunity. Chapter 9 discusses ways to sustain the learning community. Each chapter opens with a preview and a set of key questions that focus on the knowledge, strategies, and leadership behaviors addressed in the chapter.
