A large proportion of the plastics fabrication industry moved out of North America in the 1980s, causing a rise in the import of plastic products such as bags and other films ("process exports") and decline in domestic manufacturing jobs. Most of this manufacturing moved to low cost manufacturing countries, such as China, India and Vietnam. However, there has been a reversal in this trend in the past 4 to 5 years. This report studies the major drivers and challenges facing reshoring, compares the production cost of polyolefin products in North America versus Asia, and analyses the impact of the reshoring phenomenon on the polyolefin market in North America, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
