Summary

This is a NEMA application guide on Application EnvironmentsExposure to Ultraviolet Light. This publication will be periodically reviewed by the Cable Ties Product Group of the part of the NEMA Building Infrastructure Division for any revisions necessary to keep it up to date with advancing technology. This application guide was developed by the Cable Ties Product Group of the part of the NEMA Building Infrastructure Division. Approval of this application guide does not necessarily imply that all members of the Product Group voted for its approval or participated in its development. UV exposure eventually results in material oxidation, diminishing the performance characteristics of the material. A wide variety of cable tie products made from UV-resistant materials are available that prolong the life cycle of the product. This is a difficult question to answer because of the variety of applications and other variables. Due to these variables and current technology at this time, there is no specific correlation between controlled UV laboratory testing and actual years of UV exposure in the many different environments to make such a determination. Cable ties that are molded from UV- resistant materials have consistently met the reasonable expectations of a wide variety of users in diverse applications. A cable tie made from a material without UV-resistant properties should, however, not be relied upon where safety or longevity of service is a consideration in its application.
