Energy codes and ENERGY STAR® qualification require limiting air infiltration (leakage) through recessed luminaires (fixtures). The goal is to restrict passage of conditioned air and moisture through a recessed luminaire into unconditioned space in order to reduce energy loss and moisture accumulation. Because such luminaires are usually installed in the outer envelope of a building in areas that are provided with thermal insulation, they are also typically rated for insulation contact, but the two requirements are not directly related.
