The cost of wind energy has plunged in recent years thanks to technology improvements and efficiencies of scale. In response, many governments have begun exploring or implementing market-oriented policy mechanisms that decrease costs for supporting governments, ratepayers, and other stakeholders. According to Navigant Research?s Wind Turbine Order Tracker, nearly 140 projects totaling over 12 GW of capacity were awarded turbine contracts across 25 countries between July and December 2015 (2H 2015). Europe led all regions with just over 5 GW of capacity in orders during the 6-month period?over half of which were from offshore wind farms. North America had just under 2.8 GW of turbine deals signed in this period, with the majority of this capacity based in the United States. Just over 2 GW of turbine orders were placed in the Asia Pacific region between July and December 2015. Latin America and the Middle East And Africa were fourth and fifth, respectively, in wind turbine orders announced by region. Based on reported turbine deals, Siemens led all turbine order vendors in capacity awarded, with Vestas a close second. General Electric and Gamesa were third and fourth, respectively. This Navigant Research report tracks publicly announced wind turbine orders during 2H 2015. The study provides an analysis of orders placed by region, country, and vendor, in addition to a breakdown of the vendor markets of the top countries by capacity. A detailed examination of turbine components such as rotor diameter, turbine rating, and specific power is provided, as well. The report also offers a comparison of the onshore and offshore wind markets. Note that this Tracker excludes orders for the Chinese market due to the opaque state of order reporting in that market.
