Navigant Research?s Microgrid Deployment Tracker 2Q16 is the tenth edition of its microgrid database that is updated semiannually. This edition of the Tracker shows North America regaining its claim as the leading region worldwide in global market capacity with a 42% market share. Asia Pacific, which had surpassed North America in the previous update, dropped to a 39% market share. The United States again leads all countries in terms of both capacity and total number of projects. As of 2Q 2016, Navigant Research has identified 1,568 project entries, representing 15,600 MW of operating, under development, and proposed microgrid capacity and 147 new projects. The three most noteworthy additions were the 200 MW proposed solar PV microgrid addition in Senegal, 202 MW in Sampolo on the island of Corsica, and a 211 MW portfolio added across the United States by Blue Pillar. The latter?s project portfolio?along with a number of other smaller projects?allowed Blue Pillar to jump into first place among all companies in terms of project capacity. Schneider Electric retained the lead in terms of total number of microgrid projects. Although diesel generator power accounts for one-third of known microgrid capacity, solar PV capacity continues to grow. The remote segment remains the clear market leader in terms of the number of projects and overall capacity. This Navigant Research report tracks data on known grid-tied and remote microgrid projects in the proposal, planning, and deployed stages in six geographies. The report covers seven microgrid segments: commercial and industrial, community, utility distribution, institutional/campus, military, remote, and direct current (DC) systems. Specific information is provided on the capacity and project numbers by distributed generation type, energy storage type, top 10 countries, top 10 U.S. states, and top 10 microgrid companies. The Tracker also details the rated capacity, duration, and types of energy storage for each project and breaks out data by world region and microgrid segment.
