Global AMI Tracker 4Q16

Global AMI Tracker 4Q16
Summary
More than a decade after the earliest models of communicating electric meters were deployed the market for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI, or smart meters) remains strong and growing. Since the release of Navigant Research?s Global AMI Tracker in 2Q 2016, the North American AMI market has seen a handful of new project announcements (Entergy, National Grid, and Pacific Power) and some notable project updates (Ameren Illinois). Outside of the United States, Canada is seeing a lull in project activity, as the majority of the country?s major utilities have reached near full penetration of their meter fleets.
In Europe, smart electric meter activity remains high as multiple national rollouts continue in varying stages of deployment. In Germany, new legislation has been enacted that will finally kick-start the country?s partial smart meter rollout. The Asia Pacific market remains fragmented, with a subset of the region?s major countries engaging in large-scale projects while many others show limited to no activity. In China, the country?s two utilities are set to conclude their massive rollouts at the end of 2017, while Japan?s 10 utilities continue their push to deploy around 80 million meters by 2024. Latin America remains an underdeveloped market, with only a select few countries pursuing meaningful deployments. The Middle East And Africa region has also been slow to adopt AMI, though this is changing somewhat in the Middle East. Countries like Kuwait, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates have all announced large-scale projects.
This Navigant Research report provides an analysis of global utility smart meter projects. It tracks data related to global customer endpoints, meter manufacturers, AMI communications vendors, systems integrators, and meter data management (MDM) vendors. The report also includes an examination of the technologies, timeframes, and vendor selections for AMI deployments around the world, along with vendor selection share analysis for North America.
