Smart meters could be labeled as the original smart grid device. More than a decade after communicating electric meters were deployed, the market for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI, or smart meters) remains strong and growing. Since the release of Navigant Research’s Global AMI Tracker in 4Q 2016, the North American market has seen a handful of new project announcements (Clay Electric, Chugach Electric Association, and City of Pasadena) and some notable project updates (Hawaiian Electric). Outside of the United States, Canada is seeing a lull in project activity, as most of the country’s major utilities have reached near full penetration of their meter fleets. The Asia Pacific market remains fragmented, though high volume deployments continue across China and Japan as these countries’ utilities continue their push toward near nationwide coverage. In Latin America, only a select few countries are pursuing meaningful deployments. The Middle East & Africa has also been slow to adopt AMI, but this is changing somewhat in the Middle East since countries like Kuwait, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates have announced large-scale projects.
